An ex-Republican told President-elect Donald Trump’s supporters to stop complaining about people viewing them differently because of their vote.
Tom Nichols, a staff writer for The Atlantic, wrote on Saturday that elections involving Trump are a test of “character.” He explained that people who voted for Trump need to stand by their choice if people begin to see them differently.
“IMO, elections that involve Trump are not normal elections. I said eight years ago that they are tests of character. If you voted for Trump, don’t complain if people around you now think of you differently. But look – you made your choice. Be comfortable with it. You won!” he wrote on social media platform X.
Nichols, who left the Republican Party in 2018, wrote that many of Trump’s supporters would have iced out people in their community who have voted for Vice President Kamala Harris. Therefore, Nichols argued that Trump voters should not be surprised if that happens to them.
“If you insist that a friend or a family member think of no differently than they did last month, you’re just whining. If it had gone the other way, many Trumpers would have frozen out the Harris voters in their circle, because for them, acceptance is always a one-way street,” he wrote.
He concluded by telling these Trump supporters to “man up”.
“So let’s all be adults. Some issues go beyond politics. If you voted for Trump, you can’t ask for bygones from people in your circle or even your family who Trump has identified as scum, vermin, etc. Man up and accept that others have reached a conclusion about you,” he said.
Trump won the 2024 presidential election by sweeping all seven of the battleground states over Harris. Since then, Democrats have been reconciling with what went wrong as Republicans tout their victory.
Meanwhile, Trump will be taking the next few weeks to announce who will be in his Cabinet. He is also expected to meet with President Joe Biden for a transition meeting on Wednesday.
